* Na początku był Eru, Jedyny, którego na obszarze Ardy nazywają Ilúvatarem; On to powołał do życia Ainurów, Istoty Święte, zrodzone z Jego myśli. Ci byli z Nim wcześniej, niż powstało wszystko inne. Rozmawiał z nimi i poddawał im tematy muzyczne. Ainurowie zaś śpiewali dla Niego i On radował się tą muzyką.
::** ''There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Ilúvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. And he spoke to them, propounding to them themes of music; and they sang before him, and he was glad.'' (ang.)
 
* Gdy zaś znaleźli się w Pustce, Ilúvatar rzekł:<br />- Spójrzcie! Oto wasza Muzyka!<br />I ukazał im Wizję, aby wzrokiem poznali to, co przedtem było dostępne tylko ich uszom; zobaczyli nowy Świat w postaci kuli zawieszonej pośród Pustki, z niej wyodrębnionej. A kiedy tak patrzyli z podziwem, Świat zaczął przed ich oczyma odsłaniać swoją historię i wydało im się, że żyje i rośnie. Czas jakiś przypatrywali się w milczeniu; potem Ilúvatar powtórzył:<br />- Oto wasza Muzyka! (...)

And he showed to them a vision, giving to them sight where before was only hearing; and they saw a new World made visible before them, and it was globed amid the Void, and it was sustained therein, but was not of it.
